Barbie × YOON
The official launch film for a Barbie collaboration, made for Mattel with MONORAMA. A cinematic piece inspired by classic anime, blending high fashion, retro-futurism and cybernetic elegance.
From a pink moon over Tokyo to a cyborg Barbie waking up in a glass capsule, the Barbie × YOON launch film turned a collector doll into an award-winning short.
A Barbie Unlike Any Before Her
In September 2026, Mattel Creations released a Barbie unlike any before it, the Barbie Signature × Yoon Ahn doll. YOON, the designer behind AMBUSH, reimagined Barbie as a cyborg, with sculpted robotic panels, 13 points of articulation and a pet robot cat. A doll like that needed a launch film with the same attitude, something closer to an anime opening than a toy commercial. Mattel trusted The Blue Horizon AI to produce it, alongside MONOROMA and with YOON directing.
Meet the Barbie You Dreamed of as a Kid
The idea came from YOON herself. When she was a kid, Barbie was the blonde doll she played with... so she imagined the Barbie she would have wanted to meet back then, and the one she would want to be now. The film is that meeting. A young woman in a Tokyo apartment wakes a prototype in a glass capsule, and two versions of the same dream come face to face. There are no words at all, just a robot cat, a pink moon over Rainbow Bridge and two hands, one human and one not, pressed palm to palm.
A Fashion Film With AI at Its Core
It was made like a fashion film, with a real crew around the AI. YOON directed, from a script she wrote with executive producer Seb Webber. A dedicated dataset photographer shot the reference images the AI video models learned from, so the cyborg could carry the doll’s details, the white panels, the black lines, the pink headphone ears. Adrián Montecarlo led as technical director and AI artist and designed the sound, with an original score by Jester Solomon. Character consistency keeps the woman and the cyborg identical from an extreme close-up of an eye to wide shots of the dome over the bay.
Two Golds and a Silver at the Davey Awards
The film arrived with the doll on September 4, 2026, on Mattel Creations and YOON’s own channels. It then gave The Blue Horizon AI its first-ever Davey Awards: two Golds, for Creative Innovation and Best Visual Appeal, and a Silver for Short-Form. The collaboration was covered by Vogue, Hypebeast and Hypebae. And it showed that AI models for video can carry a luxury fashion launch for one of the most famous toy brands in the world.
